Arrangements for statutory consultation about the proposed changes to the Local Government Pension Scheme were confirmed today by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
Last month, the government agreed to reopen talks about controversial proposals to change public sector pensions with trade unions. Unions agreed to call off a massive public sector strike in response.
The government said that the amendments to the scheme would be designed to be fair to both pensioners and workers, and affordable and sustainable to employers and taxpayers in the long-term.
Copies of the draft proposals will be sent to all local authorities in England and Wales, with comments invited by 31 May 2005.
