The current conflict between the ‘navel-gazers’ and pragmatic practitioners played out in your recent letters pages is unnecessary. The HR management world is entirely big enough to accommodate those who wish to:
– add value by ensuring HR complements the strategic goals of organisations
– look after employees to ensure they get fair treatment
– research, compile best practice and write books and theories.
It is the balance of these three approaches that makes HR management such an exciting, vibrant and growing force in today’s business world.
If you write off any of these three perspectives, you will lose a key element of what takes HR management from being just another label on a company organisation chart to a discipline that is fundamental to the improvement of the world in which we work.
