The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) hopes to build a "genuine
partnership" with local government and create one of the safest working
environments in Europe.
Minister
for work Des Brown said local authorities and the HSE should work more closely
as they both have a critical role in improving the situation across the UK.
He
also announced a review of the relationship between the two bodies to make best
use of their strengths in tackling national, regional and local priorities.
Browne
was speaking at a local authority liaison conference which coincided with the
strategic review of health and safety across the country.
"The
role played by local authorities is a crucial part of delivering the
Government’s aim of making health and safety the cornerstone of a civilised
society," he said.
