User
ignorance and a willingness to take matters into their own hands are the key
causes of computer misuse in the workplace.
New
research from software company PolicyMatter shows the majority of IT managers
have a dim view of computer users when it comes to information management.
The
primary cause of misuse is that users ‘don’t understand what they are doing
wrong’ (47 per cent), followed by ‘users believing their actions, while not in
line with company policy, will not have any negative effects on the company’
(43 per cent).
Eighty
two per cent of respondents believed that getting staff to sign up to
acceptable use policies would improve effectiveness and prevent misuse.
