Minister starts drive to end lengthy equal pay tribunals

The
Government is planning to speed up the time it takes to resolve equal pay
tribunals.

Women’s
minister Jacqui Smith has announced a consultation process, with legislation
changes expected to take place later this year. The aim is for equal pay
tribunals to take no longer than a few months or a year to complete.

She
cited one equal pay case where a group of women speech therapists who started
proceedings in 1987 took 13 years to win their case.

The
minister will also take a critical look at the financial and banking sector
where there is currently a 43 per cent pay gap between men and women.
