From
today (Thursday 25 October) employees are entitled to paid holiday from their
first day at work.
Previously
the right to paid holiday started after 13 weeks of employment.
The
change is the result of a European Court ruling that holiday rights should
start from day one of employment, following a legal challenge brought by the
Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematograph Theatre Union.
TUC
general secretary John Monks said, "We welcome this change – another
advance in rights at work brought about by Europe.
"Particularly
vulnerable groups of workers like new starters and those on short-term
contracts will now get their holiday entitlement by right, from their first day
at work.

"But
too many UK workers still get a poor holiday deal. There’s still room for
improvement."
