Care staff under threat

A substantial shortage of workers is leading to high levels of violence in mental health and learning disability in-patient facilities in England and Wales, according to a report by the Healthcare Commission. Forty-one per cent of clinical staff and nearly 80% of nursing staff had experienced violent or threatening behaviour, it found.

Travel bursaries

The Mental Health Foundation charity is offering travelling bursaries worth 2,500 to mental health staff, service users and others working in and around UK mental health services. The deadline for applications is 15 July. Details from www.mentalhealth.org.uk or telephone 020 7803 1100.

Mattress maker risks

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) ran a series of workshops during June to highlight the problem of musculoskeletal injuries and ill health in mattress manufacturing. It is part of a three-year initiative by the HSE.

Better noise protection

Noise hazards have not changed significantly in the construction industry in the past 20 years – but better noise measurement technology, hearing protection devices and understanding of how to manage hazards has meant workers are now significantly better protected, hearing protection manufacturer Bacou-Dalloz has said.
