Nearly half of all IT abuse comes from employees in the public sector viewing pornography on their computers, an influential government watchdog warned last week.
An Audit Commission survey of over 400 public sector organisations, including NHS trusts and local authorities, reveals that the amount of inappropriate material being accessed soared from 31% in 2001 to 47% in 2004.
Other abuses included fraud, the spread of viruses, theft, hacking, and invasion of people’s privacy.
The report said public sector workers lived in a “culture of complacency” despite improved security systems.
