Mark Serwotka has been re-elected as general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS).
A former clerical officer in the old DHSS, Serwotka was first elected to the post of general secretary in December 2000 and is unique among his peers in other unions having come straight from the shop floor.
Serwotka said: “My re-election at a time when the union and its members face increasing privatisation and attacks on their jobs, pensions and pay brings continuing stability and added impetus to PCS in meeting the challenges ahead.
“The PCS has become a campaigning union focused on delivering for its members and ensuring their voice is heard. The past five years have at times been difficult and challenging, but [we will be] stepping up our campaigning for decent public services and fair pay and pensions for all.
