‘Managing with carrots’ has little for the UK manager unless he works for a multinational or US parent company as all the case studies of strategic recognition relate to US culture (would your employees appreciate a ‘Super-Bowl-style gold and diamond’ ring as a reward for safe driving?).

In contrast, A Carrot a Day, which is organised like a page-a-day calendar, is full of imaginative suggestions for recog-nition. The idea for 5 January – trading car parking spaces for a week – was a great quick hit. But naming a celestial star after an employee with heavenly results (15 August) is approximately a galaxy away from tackling real-life retention issues.
