Tackle workplace stress with a new practical guide for HR

by Personnel Today 1 Mar 2005
by Personnel Today 1 Mar 2005

Leading stress experts Dr Joe Jordan and Professor Cary Cooper have joined forces to produce a new publication aimed at helping HR manage workplace stress.

The latest addition to Personnel Today’s management resources series, the one-stop guide to Managing Stress, provides everything you need to know to help cut stress levels at work.

Jordan is managing director of Smithfield Performance and has advised on all aspects of stress prevention strategy for both private and public sector organisations.

Cooper is a director of business psychology firm Robertson Cooper, as well as professor of organisational psychology and health at Lancaster University. He is widely acknowledged as a world-leading authority on workplace stress.

According to the Health & Safety Executive, up to five million people in the UK suffer from work-related stress, which costs taxpayers around 3.7bn every year. HR has a vital role to play in preventing and managing stress more effectively.

This latest one-stop guide provides practical information to help HR get a grip on workplace stress. Written in plain English, the guide includes everything from the employers’ legal responsibilities, advice on preventing and managing stress more effectively, and detailed case studies showing different strategies working in practice.

The guide has six core chapters, covering background information to the problem of workplace stress, relevant legislation, the business case for a stress prevention strategy, practical steps on what to do about workplace stress, and how to develop a strategy. This is in addition to valuable case studies, information on further reading and resources, as well as a jargon buster.
