The T&G
union has slammed the decision by Motorola to cut 200 jobs at its East Kilbride
site.
The news
follows the announcement that the company’s Bathgate plant is to close and that
its unit at Queensferry near Edinburgh could be up for sale.
“Staff at
the East Kilbride were assured by the company only a few weeks ago that the
Bathgate announcement would not affect their jobs.
“Our office
has received angry phone calls from employees who believe it is a betrayal of the
workforce,” said Andy Baird the T&G’s regional secretary.
He
continued, “In recent months the East Kilbride employees have faced significant
changes, including a shift to twelve-hour working, which the company introduced
with promises that they would help to secure jobs.
“The way in which the company has made this
announcement is yet another demonstration of the urgent need to give trade
union the same legal rights as our colleagues in Europe, who have to be
consulted prior to any major announcement of this nature.”
