Careers in HRThe HR profession

Top job: Jane Roberts, HR director, Domino’s Pizza

by Personnel Today 18 Jan 2010
by Personnel Today 18 Jan 2010

Where were you working before, and what were your responsibilities?

I was head of HR for Domino’s Pizza Group, responsible for HR across head office and distribution.

What qualifications do you hold?

I have a postgraduate diploma in personnel management, an MA in human resource management, and I’m a fellow of the CIPD.

What are the duties in your new role?

As a member of the board, I will lead organisational development towards growth targets and further develop the HR function in partnering the business.

What are the main challenges HR faces in the next five years?

Change management, leadership development and measuring the effectiveness of HR.

What is the most over-rated tool in your job?

E-mail. Many people communicate emotions through facial expressions or tone of voice. Without face-to-face interaction, messages are often misinterpreted, making more work.

What work tool would you like to see invented?

A personality implant machine. It would make the recruitment process a lot easier.

What is the worst thing about HR?

Too much over-used jargon. We need to keep it simple.

What is the strangest situation you have been in at work?

Attending a labour court in the Republic of Ireland. The first hearing was held in a hotel.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

Sociable, open and wise.

What was your lucky break?

Joining Domino’s at the very start.

What do you regret about your career?

I don’t have any regrets

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?

Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, George Clooney, and Jamie Oliver (to do the cooking).

Who was your childhood hero?

Blue Peter presenter John Noakes.

Tell us about your best ever holiday

In Mexico with my fiancé, swimming with dolphins.

What advice would you give someone starting out in HR?

Roll your sleeves up and get into the business to understand how it works.

What is the greatest risk you have ever taken?

I don’t take risks.

Sum up your philosophy on life in one sentence.

hi, my Name is Raheel, and I was employee for dominos pizza for just one day, because I was sent home and only reason was the branch manager asked me for my wife’s passport that does not make sense at all. I tried to contact everywhere I could but no one come back with any solution, head office or employee helpline. I am absolutely discriminated and don’t know what to do, only option I have left is to go court for justice, last try to HR you may help. 07427172827
