The TUC is calling for better
employment practices in the City of London with the launch of a campaign to
highlight city workers’ rights and promote union representation.
The TUC’s Southern and Eastern
branch said the City of London has one of the worst records of employment
standards in the UK and trade union representation is lower than average.
More than 300,000 people work in the
city in banking, insurance, business services, support services, transport,
retail and other occupations, creating 40 per cent of London’s wealth, the TUC
claims.
The campaign, which begins on 16
September, will involve two weeks of early-morning leafleting of city
workplaces, widespread media publicity and an open day for city staff to find
out more about trade unions and employment rights.
