The GMB and the T&G unions, which represent thousands of council employees, have agreed to unite in a campaign to defend local authority staff pensions.
Last week the Government announced changes to civil service pensions which will see final salary schemes replaced by a career average pension.
The local government unions are now gearing up for industrial action in the New Year over the Government’s proposals to reduce pension benefits for council employees.

Brian Strutton, GMB national secretary for public services, said it is a myth that council staff enjoy “gold-plated pensions” and said they are in fact some of the lowest paid workers in the country.
“If the Government cuts council pensions any further, the tax-payer will have to pay the cost of a generation of pensioner paupers,” he said.
