Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon has announced that four Army regiments are to be axed.
It was announced in Parliament that the infantry will be cut by more than 10 per cent, with the Army cut by 1,500 troops and about 400 soldiers made redundant.

Three of the infantry’s 40 battalions will be cut and one will see its role changed. In Scotland a “super regiment” will be created, combining six regiments to create the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
Shadow Foreign Secretary Michael Ancram said it was a “dark day” for the Army and claimed it would be left overstretched.
