Best Places to Work in HR 2008

by Jo Faragher 23 May 2008
by Jo Faragher 23 May 2008

Best places to work in HR 2008Best Places to Work aims to give recognition to hard-working HR departments that spend their time making their own organisations into great employers.

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 1 AUGUST

So if you think your HR department is the most fabulous place to work in the UK, then now’s your chance to let your peers know.

Over the next two months we’ll be rating HR departments by asking you to fill in an online questionnaire – the more staff who complete it, the better the score.

Then, in October we will announce the winners of the Best Places to Work in HR at an exclusive awards and drinks reception.

HR departments will be recognised for their contributions in the following categories:

  • Leadership
  • Professional development
  • Employee engagement
  • Reward and recognition
  • Best large HR function
  • Best small HR function.

There will also be a prize for the Overall Best Place to Work in HR.

For a chance to win, get the members of your HR department to fill in the survey by the 1 August. All responses will remain strictly confidential.

What makes a best place to work?

by Gareth Jones, leader, Courtenay HR

As we look ahead to this year’s awards, what did we learn about being a Best Place last year?

Well, for many, having extensive resources, international development opportunities and a large budget were not essential if the success of the small organisations that peppered the winners list last year is anything to go by. A sense of teamwork, a great leader and a passion for your work were much higher on the agenda.

From last year’s results it was clear that some of the large organisations were in that bracket too, with McDonald’s winning the Best Large HR Department and Lloyds TSB also featuring in the shortlists.

This year we’ve made it even easier for larger organisations to participate, by introducing a sliding scale of minimum entries for larger employers.

Employees will need to ask themselves the following questions, among others:

  • Am I getting a return on the energy I’m putting into my role?
  • Do I respect and admire my leader?
  • Do they respect and admire me?
  • Does my reward meet my expectations?
  • Am I taken seriously?
  • Can I see the impact of what I do?

So, whatever type of organisation you work in, large or small, public or private, please take the time to participate – the more people in your department who enter, the higher your score.

Recognising your organisation’s greatness in people management terms should not be a nice-to-have, it should be an absolute business priority.
