Leading the way at the Chartered Management Institute

The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) hopes to improve the leadership qualities of UK managers through a guide to best practice.

The Code of Professional Conduct and Practice follows 2005 research conducted by the CMI and the Department of Trade and Industry, which showed that less than four in 10 managers saw the leadership qualities they expected to see in senior management. Some 568 junior and middle managers were polled by e-mail and 100 by telephone for the research.

The code details key attributes and actions that managers need to exhibit to be successful. These include fostering a culture of openness and transparency and communicating clearly, effectively and openly.

CMI members are also requested to exhibit mutual confidence and trust and to respect matters of faith, conscience and diversity.

CMI director of marketing and corporate affairs, Jo Causton, said: “Adopting the new code will provide individuals with a framework of best practice management conduct on which to base their relationships and activities with colleagues.”

The CMI’s 75,000 individual and 450 corporate members sign up to its codes.
