Fewer serious accidents
The rate of fatal and major injuries at work has fallen, with construction experiencing the biggest reduction in the number of people killed at work, according to the Health and Safety Executive. There has been a reduction of about 15% in injuries leading to absences of more than three days.

Dawn of the dead
Employers have been urged to watch out for job applicants who are ‘faking the dead’. Deceased impersonation is now the fastest growing fraud in the UK, with more than 70,000 cases recorded in 2004 and up to 100,000 expected this year. It accounts for around a third of all identity theft cases.

Transsexual discrimination
A transsexual who worked for the Flybe airline has won her claim of sexual discrimination after being forced from her job by managers who were unhappy with her appearance. Marlene Davidson, who was formerly called Malcolm, was bullied and mocked after beginning a sex-change procedure.
