Standard Chartered’s Tim Miller named as Personnel Today’s top Power Player

Standard Chartered’s HR chief Tim Miller has been crowned Personnel Today’s Top HR Power Player for 2009.

Over the past few months the Personnel Today team has compiled the list with valued input from the editorial advisory board members, a wide range of academics, opinion-formers and top HR directors, as well as our readers. This year, for the first time, readers’ votes counted towards the final decision.

Despite the upheaval in the financial markets, Miller has this year headed a drive to redefine the role of HR in Standard Chartered, to ensure it remains customer-centric and business-focused.

Earlier this year he was made a Chartered Companion of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the profession. In an interview recently, Miller attributed the bank’s success in the tough economic climate to high levels of employee engagement and a focus on performance management.

On receiving the award, Miller said: “I believe that people are at the heart of any business. HR is about engaging the workforce to drive business performance, focusing on creating a culture of performance and differentiation, and on developing great managers who engage their teams.

Miller joined Standard Chartered in 2000 as group head of HR and was appointed to his current role of director, people, property and assurance in 2006. His portfolio has responsibility for HR, corporate real estate, corporate secretariat, legal, compliance and assurance, internal audit and global research functions.
