The push for flexible working is having unfortunate repercussions for the Brownies. Girlguiding UK, which runs the Brownies, says 50,000 seven to 10-year-olds are on a waiting list to join the organisation because it cannot attract enough adult volunteers to run Brownie groups.
The organisation said new working practices, which enable both parents to work, meant fewer people have spare time for such activities.
Girlguiding UK said it needs 8,000 more volunteers to meet demand. To encourage more volunteers, the organisation has set up a working group - the Project 50k Group - to support the recruitment of adult volunteers.
