The decision by the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) not to take action against Avon and Somerset Police will renew calls for much-needed debate on the issue of positive discrimination.
Police forces are under pressure to achieve race targets, and boosting diversity in their ranks is a frustratingly slow process.
But you have to question what kind of message the CRE’s decision is sending out.
Until the legislation is updated, discriminating against anyone because of their race is illegal.
We wonder if the police themselves would be quite so lenient with lawbreakers.
