Your article on HR careers (Personnel Today, 12 September) illustrates the importance of taking a planned approach to career development that combines the right mix of qualification and work experience.
The challenge continues as HR professionals move up the career ladder and into more senior roles.
Our research reveals that more than half of senior or board-level HR professionals believe that it was operational experience and business exposure rather than academic or professional qualifications that helped them progress their careers.
This was further reinforced by the fact that more than half of the respondents said that increased operational exposure and business responsibility across the organisation – and hands-on experience of more commercial issues – had been of most benefit.
