Triple jumper Nathan Douglas is one of the UK’s few medal hopes at the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Athletics, which began on Saturday. But early planning is needed to make sure the 2012 London Olympics get off to such a flying start – both on and off the track, experts warn.
Employers need to start planning workforce strategies now to ensure success, according to Rebecca Rhodes, skills director at the Learning and Skills Council. “HR teams need to understand how their industry will be affected and identify skills needed,” she said. “This is a great opportunity to offer solid work placements and apprenticeships. Training young people now can help build a skilled workforce for 2012. But my concern is that employers won’t plan early enough.”
