The
poaching of highly skilled technical workers is becoming an increasing problem
in Sheffield’s engineering industry, claims the EEF.
Gordon
Scott, director of the EEF Sheffield Association, said, “Some firms, desperate
to fill key posts, are offering suitable people from other engineering
companies up to £200 a week more to ditch their jobs and move.”
For
the firms affected, the loss of a key technical worker could be a nightmare,
says Scott.
“The
staff involved in the current outbreak are usually highly trained technical
people with practical experience in such areas as logic programming,” he said.
Scott
claims that these individuals, who receive £400 a week, are being offered an
extra 33 per cent on top.
He
suggests that the solution to this problem is obvious – more intensive training
by companies to develop highly skilled workers.
