Heavy industry pay deals continue downward slide

Pay
deals in engineering and manufacturing firms are continuing to fall, according
to the Engineering Employers’ Federation.

Average
settlements for the three months to January fell by 0.1% to 2.3% compared with
the previous quarter.

The
EEF said more than 60 firms have frozen the pay.

David
Yeandle, the federation’s deputy director of employment policy, said:
"This continuing low level of pay settlements and high incidence of pay
freezes and deferred settlements is a further illustration of how firmly
depressed the engineering and manufacturing sector remains."
