In recent years, Ulrich’s work has focused on the measurement of HR results.
In making his surprise announcement at the close of his two-hour talk, Ulrich
also challenged the audience to move further forward in asserting the
profession’s role in workplace innovation, taking advantage of "great
theory and great research" available, aligning its actions with external
stakeholders and improve succession planning within HR itself.

HR must continue to build on its progress in bridging the gap between
academia and practice, he continued, its improved networking, recognising that
"competition and compassion are not opposite sides of the issue", and
building capabilities "that go beyond any one leader".
Ulrich also credited the HR profession with exerting a caring and ethical
influence. "In the long run," he said, "such warmth…produces
results."
