Jaguar
managers are meeting union bosses today amid mounting speculation that its Coventry
plant is to be shut with the loss of 2,000 jobs.
Sky
News has been told that the closure of the Brown’s Lane factory in Coventry
will be confirmed.
There
is speculation that production could be switched to the nearby Castle Bromwich
site in Birmingham
or even to the US.
Jaguar’s owner Ford has so far refused to comment on the claims.
The
luxury carmaker has seen sales plunge in the US
as the weak dollar forces up prices across the Atlantic.
The
Transport and General Workers’ and Amicus unions will argue that Ford would be
breaking agreements about the future of the plant if the closure goes ahead.
The
unions could launch a ballot for industrial action if the closure plans are
confirmed.
