Kelvin Cheatle named new president of HPMA

The Healthcare People Management Association (HPMA) has appointed Kelvin Cheatle as its new president.

Cheatle, director of workforce and environment for West London Mental Health Trust, will start the role in December, taking over from current president Deborah O’Dea.

He said: “It’s an enormous honour to be asked to take on the HPMA presidency. Deborah O’Dea is an impossible act to follow given her standing in the profession, but I hope to bring my experience gained from 12 years as an NHS HR director in a very challenging mental health trust to bear in this role.”

Before appointment to his current role in 2000, Cheatle was HR director at Broadmoor Hospital and led major reforms of working practices and employee relations in that organisation, which now forms part of the West London Trust.

In 2007 he was appointed as a visiting fellow at University College London where he teaches on its strategic HR degree programme.
