MPs lead by example and accept 1.9% pay increase

MPs last night accepted a below inflation pay rise of 1.9% without the need for a vote.

They will earn £61,820 for the financial year ending this April after the staged settlement, below the 2% limit prime minister Gordon Brown set for public sector workers.

Tens of thousands of off-duty police officers marched in central London on Wednesday in protest at their own 1.9% pay offer.

The Commons yesterday also approved an increase in each MP’s budget for hiring staff from £90,505 to up to £102,650.
