More than 180,000 Tesco staff across the UK are to share £78m of free shares, the supermarket giant announced today.

The company is giving all eligible staff free shares equivalent to 3.6% of their earnings over the past year. The shares will be kept in a trust for five years, after which they will be made available free of tax.

Tesco ran a campaign to enrol more than 45,000 newly eligible staff in March and April to reach the record-breaking 180,000 total.

Chief executive, Sir Terry Leahy, said: “Giving our people the chance to be shareholders is our way of saying thank you and ensuring they share in the success of the business.”
