I am staggered that Susan Anderson, director of HR policy at the CBI, states that evidence suggests older people find it hard to find jobs mainly because their numeracy and literacy skills are generally too low for the modern workplace. When did she last see a job application from our current university leavers? In my experience, the younger generation’s literacy skills are very sadly lacking. Apart from not being able to spell, applicants frequently struggle to structure a sentence properly, and they are numerically challenged without a calculator.
