Further talks are to be held at Acas next week in a bid to
resolve the firefighters’ dispute, following the last minute intervention of
the Government.
The Fire Brigades Union has decided not to call further
strikes after agreeing to meet employers in a fresh bid to settle the pay
dispute.
It made the decision after the union’s executive met for
over six hours, to hear details of talks its general secretary Andy Gilchrist held
with John Prescott and local authority employers.
Gilchrist said the meeting was the "first constructive
intervention" from the Government since the dispute started five months
ago.
