The TUC has welcomed the Royal
Assent given to the new Employment Relations Bill, saying it contains
"significant union victories".
The Bill paves the way
for the new information and consultation process and the Government claims it
will also provide a set of standards for ‘fresh, modern, constructive trade
unions’, which will help them work more co-operatively and efficiently with
businesses.
TUC general secretary Brendan
Barber said the unions would be able to recruit members in an environment free
of "underhand, US-style, union-busting activities"’ and would make it
easier to exclude and expel far right activists in breach of union rules.
"The Union Modernisation
Fund that the Bill establishes will enable unions to modernise in the same way
the Government has helped businesses adapt to grow in the modern economy,” he
said.
