Five new members have been appointed to the council of conciliation service Acas.
They are Jonathan Michie, professor of management at the University of Birmingham; Susan Anderson, director of human resources policy at the CBI; Derek Simpson, general secretary of Amicus; Debbie Coulter, deputy general secretary of the GMB union; and Peter Bennett, HR director at Network Rail.
Trade and industry secretary Alistair Darling said: “The Acas council sets the strategic direction, policies and priorities necessary to allow Acas to help the modern British economy meet the employment relations challenges of the 21st century.”

The appointments on 1 May 2007 are for tenures of three years. They will each receive an annual payment of £1,576 and £160 for each day they work on council business.
Anderson is also a member of the Low Pay Commission, and is entitled to £232.72 for each day worked on commission business.
