Basic Skills Agency rates Army’s literacy and numeracy initiative as model of good practice: New model army

The Army’s basic skills initiative – developed in partnership with the Basic Skills Agency (BSA) – has been endorsed as a model of good practice for other major employers in raising standards.

Up to half of the 12,000 annual recruits have literacy or numeracy skills at levels at or below those expected of a primary school leaver.

The Army’s current target is for all personnel to reach at least Level 1 in literacy and numeracy (equivalent to GCSE grades D-G) within three years of joining. The BSA’s director Carol Taylor said the Army’s experience showed “developing skills can be done with a large, dispersed workforce”.
