Government departments in Whitehall have been ‘named and shamed’ by Westminster Council because of smoking staff filling the streets with cigarette butts. The worst offenders were the Departments for Education and Skills, the DTI and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the council claimed.
Council cabinet member Alan Bradley said the government should lead by example. “It’s disappointing that, despite intervention, some large government offices are still failing to take the issue seriously.” The Home Office was singled out as an example of good practice for providing bins for smokers.
