OH nurse Nichola Elvy’s Building Health consultancy, which provides OH and safety services to the demolition and construction industries, has been named best new company in the Lewisham Business Awards. The awards recognise new and innovative businesses. Elvy has worked in OH and safety since 1993 and set up her own company in 2005 after working as an inspector for the Health and Safety Executive for 10 years.
Matt Hawkins has moved into a new role as regional senior OH adviser (South-East) at Unilever. He has joined at an exciting time – the OH function is making the transition to an internal shared service model, to standardise service delivery, continually improve quality and capitalise on the OH knowledge base at Unilever. He was previously at West London Mental Health NHS Trust.
The speaker at this year’s Ruth Alston Memorial Lecture, which takes place on 15 May in London, will be Rosie Winterton, MP, minister of state for health services. Her responsibilities include emergency preparedness including pandemic flu; cancer, cardiac services, diabetes and renal services; and mental health, including the Mental Health Bill.
Senior occupational physician
Dr Eileen Cahill-Canning has won the British Women in Policing Award for Police Staff Achievement. Her work has led to a drop in the average time off sick for a police officer from 10 days to seven days. Cahill-Canning set up programmes offering healthy lifestyle advice through road shows on diet, fitness, stress and cancer.
