Fear of a challenge shows HR types lack spine

I wasn’t surprised to read that senior executives rate HR as the worst of all business functions (Personnel Today, 7 March), particularly having also read that 67% of Personnel Today readers would not take an HR job at Gate Gourmet (Personnel Today, 28 February).

In my experience, both as an HR professional and as a senior operational manager, too many HR staff are prepared to take easy options in the workplace, and are not prepared to roll up their sleeves and tackle difficult business and staffing issues.

The fact that so many would turn down a job in an organisation with such huge HR challenges, and where HR could really have such a massive impact on the success of the business, speaks volumes.
