Royal Mail bonuses

Postal workers at the Royal Mail are to each be given bonuses of £1,074 after the mail service announced record annual profits of £537m. Royal Mail directors are set to receive a total of almost £10m – with Tony McCarthy, director for people and organisational development, reportedly in line for £1.34m. Over the past 12 months the state-owned operator made more than £2m a day. www.royalmail.co.uk

God is not enough

The Church of Scotland is to publish a code of rights for ministers which will guarantee certain working conditions. The report is to include areas where ministers should enjoy basic rights, such as union membership, pensions and sick leave. Ministers are in the unusual position of having God considered to be their employer, but while God works in mysterious ways, trade union Amicus said it believed more terrestrial forces were needed to watch over staff. www.churchofscotland.org.uk

Compensation for 10%

Less than one in 10 people made ill or injured by their work ever receive any compensation from the state or from their employers, according to a TUC report, A Little Compensation. The report said that every year around 850,000 people suffered an accident or developed a disease as a result of their job, but just 80,000 received compensation from their employer or from the state for pain and suffering. www.tuc.org.uk
