Ballot papers issued to firefighters

Ballot
papers are being sent firefighters today, as they vote whether to stage their
first national strike for 25 years.

The
Fire Brigades’ Union wants firefighters to be on a minimum salary £30,000 – a
pay rise of 40 per cent.

Fire
Brigade employers the Local Government Association (LGA), have offer a 4 per
cent interim deal, and say they will add whatever an independent government
review recommends.

Union
general secretary Andy Gilchrist said independent research shows that the cost
of the pay claim would be 41p per household per week.  He said union members could strike by the end of October.
