Bank Holiday workers earn more

Eight
in 10 staff working this Bank Holiday Monday (28 August) will be paid double
time, according to a survey.

The
Employee Reward and Benefit report by HR consultants Watson Wyatt also shows
that 15 per cent of employees working on the bank holiday will be paid
time-and-a-half.

The
survey of 272 UK companies also reveals that one in four employers pay staff
double time for Saturday mornings and four out of 10 pay double rate for
Saturday afternoons.

Rachel
Brown, a consultant for Watson Wyatt, commenting on the findings, urged
employers to introduce a more flexible working week.

"This
highlights the significant costs associated with asking employees to work
outside their normal hours. These costs can only be encouraging employers to
move towards a more flexible approach to defining the working week," she
said.
