A group of 18 Premiership football referees has joined the Prospect union after hearing that their contracts were due to be reviewed.
The referees, employees of the Professional Game Match Officials body, decided they needed support in negotiating their terms and conditions after being classified as ‘professional’ by the FA Premier League.
However, Prospect national secretary Alan Leighton stressed he would not be getting embroiled in rows such as referee Phil Dowd’s spat with Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell (right).

“My responsibility does not include comment on every contentious decision during football fixtures,” he said.
