The
Government should scrap its plans for a £10m fund to modernise the trade
unions, according to CBI chief Digby Jones.
Speaking
at the Institute of Directors (IoD) annual convention yesterday, Jones said the
unions were largely irrelevant as they only served the 19 per cent of private
sector employees who are members.
He
said the CBI was "fundamentally opposed" to the funds being given to
"an individual lobby group" and accused public sector unions of
resisting modernisiation.

"What
guarantee do we have the money will be for modernisation and not for
recruitment," Jones said. "I know of many hospices which could sorely
use that money."
