The UK construction industry is set to receive a boost in the run up to the 2012 Olympics as the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) prepares an “integrated migrant worker package” for overseas workers. The package should include a health and safety test for overseas workers and a skills assessment to identify and convert foreign formal qualifications. The programme may also include advice on employment rights, pay rates and union membership. Trevor Fish, CITB-ConstructionSkills migrant worker project manager, said: “It is our intention to ensure that all migrant workers in the UK are qualified, competent and safe. We have a range of initiatives to ensure that migrant workers and their qualifications are integrated with UK standards and practices.” The CITB is expected to pilot health and safety tests in Poland in September.
