The
TUC General Council has elected Roger Lyons as its new president.
He
takes over from Nigel de Gruchy and will hold the position for the next 12
months.
Lyons
is currently joint general secretary of public sector union Amicus and is a
member of the TUC General Council and the European Metalworkers Federation
Executive.
He is
a Fellow of University College, London, a member of the College Council, of the
Design Council, the Central Arbitration Committee and a member of the
Employment Appeals Tribunal. He is also a member of the CSEU Executive.
Lyons
was a founder member of the Anti-Apartheid Movement, an observer for the first
free elections in South Africa, and was involved in the Mississippi Civil
Rights Project in 1965. He is also an active campaigner against the BNP.
