HR staff at Matalan face an uncertain future after the discount fashion and homeware retailer announced that it is to axe hundreds of jobs from its stores and head office.
The job cuts were announced internally late last week, according to the Daily Telegraph.
A consultation process with staff is due to begin later this week. The cuts will be “in the hundreds”, according to an executive close to the company. Matalan employs 16,800 people.
A Matalan spokeswoman said the redundancies were a result of the cost-cutting measures alluded to by John King, Matalan chief executive, at the retailer’s full-year results last month.
At the time, Matalan said that sales in March and April had fallen by 8.8%. Trading is believed to have continued to be poor.
