Nursing unions are due to meet with health secretary Patricia Hewitt this week in a bid to avert damaging industrial action over pay. The unions are angry at a 1.9% pay award imposed by the government earlier this month. The Royal College of Nursing, Unison and Amicus are considering balloting their members over strike action.
