Phone company Orange plans to cut up 270 staff in the UK.
Industry sources said the company could be looking to cut 1-2 per cent of its 13,500-strong UK workforce.
A spokesman for Orange, the biggest mobile operator in the UK and France, said the planned redundancies would not involve sales and call centre staff, and mainly affect those handling its network and technical systems.
Orange also said it was hard to say how many people were likely to be affected, with the company still to carry out a full consultation with its workforce.
