Designed as sequels to The 24-Carrot Manager, these two books aim to help managers motivate employees through praise and recognition. They do this with varying degrees of success.
‘Managing with carrots’ has little for the UK manager unless he works for a multinational or US parent company as all the case studies of strategic recognition relate to US culture (would your employees appreciate a ‘Super-Bowl-style gold and diamond’ ring as a reward for safe driving?).
In contrast, A Carrot a Day, which is organised like a page-a-day calendar, is full of imaginative suggestions for recog-nition. The idea for 5 January – trading car parking spaces for a week – was a great quick hit. But naming a celestial star after an employee with heavenly results (15 August) is approximately a galaxy away from tackling real-life retention issues.
